Six SMU Men's Soccer Players Earn All-Conference Honors
Cruz, da Silva, Harwell, Osorio named to second team

Nov. 11, 2008

DALLAS (SMU) - The SMU men's soccer team kept alive its reputation as one of the most decorated programs in the nation when six players earned All-Conference USA honors Tuesday.

Four Mustangs - defender/midfielder Leone Cruz, forward Paulo da Silva, midfielder Jeff Harwell and midfielder Kekoa Osorio - were named second-team all-conference, while midfielder Diogo de Almeida and forward Arthur Ivo were named to the Conference USA All-Freshman team.

Cruz proved to be one of the most versatile players in Conference USA this season. After establishing himself as one of the premier defenders in the conference, injuries forced a shuffling of the SMU lineup, and he stepped forward into a midfielder role. He immediately became an offensive force, firing 30 shots (second-most on the team) and adding seven points on three goals (including his first two-goal game in a 5-1 win over Central Arkansas) and an assist.

da Silva started the season as fast as any player in the country. He led the Mustangs to victories over Old Dominion and Virginia in the season's opening weekend, a win over Stanford and a tie with then-No. 8 Cal at the Cal Legacy Classic and victories over George Mason and Oakland to help SMU win the SMU Prego's Express Italian Men's Soccer Invitational. da Silva was named Most Valuable Player of the tournament, and was named National Player of the Week by collegesoccernews.com and earned a spot on topdrawersoccer.com's National Team of the Week. da Silva finished the regular season as the Mustangs' leading scorer, with 16 points on a team-leading seven goals and two assists ... despite missing five games.

In his senior season, Harwell was asked to shoulder more of the offensive load, and he did so through his creativity and superior passing. Harwell (a third-team all-conference selection last year) had eight points this season, including a goal - the game-winning goal in SMU's 2-1 victory in the regular-season finale at FIU - and six assists, tying him with teammate Gabe Arredondo for season title for most assists by any C-USA player.

Osorio is essentially the glue of the SMU midfield, dominating possession in the middle of the field and distributing the ball to members of the Mustangs' offense. The sophomore had 14 shots and one assist in the regular season.

de Almeida emerged as one of the most dangerous freshman scoring threats in the conference in 2008, finishing second on the team with 12 points on five goals (also second on the team) and two assists. He scored both goals in SMU's crucial 2-0 road victory at UAB 65 seconds apart, the second of which showed off his powerful shot as he lifted a 45-yard bomb over UAB goalkeeper Wes Johnson.

Ivo is a dynamic scoring threat, firing a team-leading 31 shots this season en route to nine points on three goals (each total tied for third-best on the team) and three assists (tied for second).

The Mustangs begin the postseason at 8 p.m. Wednesday night when they face South Carolina in the first round of the Conference USA Men's Soccer Championship at SMU's Westcott Field. For ticket information, log on to SMUMustangs.com or call 214-SMU-GAME.
