SMU's Jeff Harwell Earns All-Region Award

Midfielder honored for senior season

Dec. 13, 2008

DALLAS (SMU) - SMU midfielder Jeff Harwell capped off his career by being named third-team All-Midwest Region by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA).

A dynamic passer, Harwell had eight points in his senior season on a goal and six assists. His six assists tied him with teammate Gabe Arredondo for the second-highest total among all players in Conference USA.

In four seasons with the Mustangs, Harwell had 32 points on six goals and 20 assists. He was named to the Conference USA All-Freshman team in 2005 and was a third-team All-Conference USA honoree in 2007.

SMU has had at least one player earn NSCAA All-Region honors in 19 of the 20 seasons in which the organzation has handed out the awards.

Congratulations, Jeff!

Ever since he was a freshman, Jeff clearly was the kind of player you love if he's on your team, and you'd want to strangle if you played against him. He's not a big guy, but he's a clever player who drives opponents nuts with brilliant passing and scrappy play. Definitely one of those players who will be best appreciated when he's gone. Would love to have another Jeff Harwell suiting up for the Ponies next year.

No kidding! One of my favorite players ever at SMU. Very creative with a high level of skill and desire. He had his ups and downs with SH, I gather because of his attitude when he was not playing. Anyway it always seemed to me the overall quality of play dropped a little when Jeff left the field. He will be missed.

With his skill level, he could have been a much more prolific scorer - the guy could shoot with the best of them. But the fact that he gave up shots in order to set up teammates with his great passes speaks to the kind of unselfish player he is. He'd tear you apart if you were on the other team, but he's a guy I would love to play alongside because he really does make the people around him better.
