Lesniak Wins Cotton Bowl Classic Title
Lesniak Overcomes Collegiate Foes to Advance

Jan. 6, 2009

DALLAS (SMU) - SMU's Marta Lesniak has been dominant for the Mustangs since arriving on the Hilltop last fall and the freshman continued her impressive play recently when she won the women's open singles draw at the 2008 MCB Cotton Bowl Classic Dec. 27-29. The native of Poland dropped just 10 games while winning all five of her matches in straight sets en route to the championship.

Lesniak began play by making quick work of Tyler Junior College's Ashley Longoria in the round of 32 on Saturday, winning 6-0, 6-0. She followed that performance with another dominant win in the Round of 16 over Dallas' Madeleine Murray (6-1, 6-0).

She returned to play Sunday morning for quarterfinal action and faced her toughest challenge of the event from University of Texas freshman Julia Wiegand. Lesniak held off the feisty Wiegand in the first set 6-4, and then regrouped to win the second set with ease, 6-1.

Lesniak got off to a solid start again in the semifinals when she took the first set, 6-0, from Highland Park's Abby Stainback, before claiming the second set, 6-2, to advance to the championship match.

In the championship, Lesniak met University of Illinois freshman and seventh-seeded Amy Allin. Allin also proved to be no match for the SMU rookie as Lesniak cruised to a 6-2, 6-0, championship win.

Lesniak also competed in the mixed doubles open draw with former SMU men's tennis standout and fellow Poland native David Kuczer. The pair advanced to the semifinals by winning their first three matches in straight sets, before falling in a third-set tie-breaker in the championship match to the fourth-seeded duo of Rafael/Seagraves.

Lesniak came to SMU ranked No. 58 in the International Tennis Federation's junior ranking system. She was ranked No. 27 in ITF doubles and earlier this fall won the Wild Card qualifying draw at the Fidelity-Southlake Women's Pro Classic. The Wild card win granted her entry into the main draw where she advanced to the quarterfinals.

Congratulations to Marta and the SMU coaching staff!

Cotton Bowl name is a little ironic, but it sounds like this is a pretty nice tournament - great job.
