SMU Men's Swimming And Diving Holds Off Aggies
Mustangs Edge Out Texas A&M By One

COLLEGE STATION, Texas (SMU)-SMU men's swimming and diving defeated Texas A&M by a one-point margin (122-121) on Friday, January 30 at the TAMU Student Recreation Natatorium. The meet came down to the final race, the 400 free relay, with the Mustangs taking the win in a new season-best time.

Freshman Mitchell Thomson swam an exceptional meet to help guide the Mustangs to a win. Thomson blazed to a new career and season-best time in the 1000 free, clocking in at 9:09.89 for the title. Thomson also won the 500 free with a career and season-best time, touching in at 4:30.05.

Junior Ed Downes pulled in a couple first place finishes, as well; Downes captured the 200 IM title with a time of 1:49.12 and edged out the Aggies in the 200 fly, clocking a season-best time of 1:47.85. Downes also finished second in the 200 breast with a new season-best time.

In the 200 back, junior Pontus Renholm earned a win for SMU, and senior Luka Vrtovec took the 50 free title. Vrtovec and freshman Robin Andreasson touched in second in the 100 and 200 free, respectively.

In relay action, the Mustangs placed second in the 400 medley relay with a time of 3:17.31. With the meet winding down and the win up for grabs, the quartet of Vrtovec, Andreasson, Renholm, and junior Thomas Fadnes secured the title with a new season-best time of 2:56.85.

The Mustangs will return to action on Saturday, February 7 against the University of Texas in Austin, Texas.
