Briceno Named C-USA Women's Tennis Player Of The Week

DALLAS (SMU) - SMU junior Nicole Briceno, the 2008 C-USA Newcomer of the Year, is the Women's Tennis Player of the Week, as announced by the league office. Briceno went 3-0 in singles and 2-1 in doubles last week as the Mustangs notched wins over league foes Southern Miss and Tulane.

Briceno helped the No. 73 Mustangs down C-USA foes Southern Miss and Tulane, while also recording SMU's only singles win against No. 23 LSU. In singles, Briceno defeated the number three singles player Whitney Wolf of LSU in straight sets (6-3, 7-5), after Wolf had previously beaten the No. 63 player Maya Johansson of No. 3 UCLA. Briceno extended her win streak to three over the weekend, ousting Southern Miss' Alexandra Kaluza and Tulane's Liz Hamlin in straight set wins.

In doubles competition, Briceno paired with teammate Kseniia Tokarieva for a 2-1 weekend. The tandem edged out Kaluza and Shannon Rogers of Southern Miss in an 8-7 victory, and cruised past Tulane's Marcela Fonseca and Sharon Siegel, 8-1. Briceno is currently 4-1 in singles and doubles, while her efforts have helped the Mustangs begin the spring season 8-1.This is the first career weekly honor for Briceno.
