Sept. 9, 2009

FRISCO, Texas (SMU) - FC Dallas added two former SMU standouts to their roster in the past week and a half, trading Drew Moor to Colorado to acquire Ugo Ihemelu and signing Daniel Hernandez.

Ihemelu played at SMU from 2001-04 and has had a successful MLS career, playing 63 matches for LA Galaxy and Colorado Rapids before the trade to Dallas. Ihemelu has made two appearances for the US National Team, coming in as a substitute against Norway and Sweden.

Hernandez played at SMU from 1995-97 and was named 1997 NSCAA National Player of the Year. Hernandez played eight years in MLS for Los Angeles, Tampa Bay, New York, and New England before spending three years in the Mexican First Division. Hernandez compiled 115 games played in MLS before continuing his career in Mexico.

Hernandez and Ihemelu join Bruno Guarda (2005-07) as former Mustangs playing for FC Dallas. FC Dallas is coached by longtime SMU head coach Schellas Hyndman. FC Dallas is operated by Hunt Sports Group, which is chaired by SMU alumus Clark Hunt.

MLS is a great option for many college stars. Most top young players never play college but go direct to MLS, Europe, Mexico, etc. The next level of players go to college. A steady stream ofSMU players going to the MLS is a good recruiting tool.
