SMU Cross Country Wins NCAA South Central Regional Championship
Silje Fjortoft wins individual race with time of 20:29.7

WACO (SMU) - The SMU Cross Country team won the NCAA South Regional Championship on Saturday in Waco. It was the second NCAA South Central Regional Championship for the Mustangs, with the last title coming in 2004. The course was a 6k run around Cottonwood Creek Golf Course in Waco.

Individually Silje Fjortoft was the top individual, finishing first out of 134 competitors with a time of 20:29.7. The Mustangs had four place in the top-10 overall with Sara Sjokvist (4th, 21:10.8), Veronika Blom (7th, 21:17.2), Kristine Eikrem-Engeset (8th, 21:20.6) rounding out the group.

As a team SMU totaled just 43 points, 11 better than the host school Baylor (54) which came in second. Other C-USA schools to compete were Rice which finished 5th (172), Houston, which came in 7th (208) and Tulane coming in 15th (414).

With the win, the team has earned its fourth berth to the NCAA Championships, which will be held on Nov. 23. Last year SMU finished 20th at the event held in Terre Haute, Ind., the site of this year's race.
