Volleyball Signs Four To National Letters of Intent
Myklebust, Young, Armstrong and Westerbur set to join Mustangs in 2011
Nov. 10, 2010
DALLAS (SMU) --- SMU volleyball head coach Lisa Seifert announced the signing of four student-athletes to letters of intent to attend SMU and play for the 2011 Mustang volleyball team. The signees include outside hitters Savannah Myklebust, Caroline Young and Carla Armstrong, and middle blocker Julia Westerbur.
"This class will make an immediate impact on the program," said coach Seifert said. "This group is by far one of the best classes we have brought to SMU. They are all athletic attackers with a high volleyball IQ."
Myklebust, a 5-11 outside hitter from Austin High School in Sugarland, Texas, has been named to the first team All-District 23-5A each of the past three years. During this season, she received national player of the week honors by the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) and MaxPreps. In each of her past three years, Myklebust earned the Academic Excellence - Math Award. Myklebust was recruited by Florida, Rice, TCU, LSU, Virginia, UCLA and others.
The 5-11 Young was named Class 4A Second Team All-State as a junior from Brenham, Texas. The outside hitter helped lead the Brenham Cubettes to last year's state 4A state championship game. One of the top offensive players in the state, Young was named as the Most Valuable Attacker for District 18-4A. Young chose SMU over Oklahoma, Iowa, Arkansas, Texas A&M and Rice.
Armstong, a 5-10 outside hitter from Houston, Texas, earned a nomination the Under Armour All-American team last season. The three-time academic honor roll selection was named second team all-district as a junior and to the 2009 Junior Olympics All-Tournament Team. Armstrong chose SMU over Oregon State, San Diego State, Texas State, Georgia and Georgia Tech.
Westerbur, a 6-1 middle blocker from College Station, Texas, was named to the AVCA Under Armour All-American Watch List earlier this season. The National Honor Society member earned 2010 All-Texas Team Special Recognition by LonestarVolleyball.com. Westerbur was recruited by Houston, Memphis UTEP, Central Michigan, Kansas, Florida and Washington.
