Volleyball Boasts Five All-C-USA Selections
Powell and Wilkerson earn first team selections, Becerra, Manning and Oliver named to second team

Nov. 23, 2010

IRVING, Texas (SMU) --- The SMU volleyball team placed five athletes on the All-Conference USA team as announced by the league today. Outside hitters Dana Powell and Kathryn Wilkerson earned first-team honors, while Kelli Becerra, Courtney Manning and Jessica Oliver garnered second-team selections.

Powell, an outside hitter from Tulsa, Okla., led the Mustangs this season with 396 kills and is second on the team with 429 digs. Powell is now a three-time C-USA selection, which is the most in program history, after earning second team honors last season and being named to the all-freshman team in 2008. The junior was named to C-USA's All-Academic team yesterday.

Wilkerson, who ranks in the top five of eight different SMU career statistical categories, earns her first selection to the All-Conference team. This season, the senior is second on the team with 3.05 kills per set and third with 3.57 digs per set. Wilkerson has notched 20 double-doubles (10+ digs and kills in a match) this season and is one of only seven Mustangs to total over 1,000 career kills and digs.

A two-time C-USA Setter of the Week selection, Becerra averaged 10.69 assists per set this season. The junior has registered 16 double-doubles this season and charted 317 digs. Becerra has notched 1,283 assists this year, which is the fifth-highest single-season total in program history.

Manning currently leads C-USA and ranks 17th nationally with 1.35 blocks per set. The sophomore leads the Mustangs with a .282 hitting percentage and has notched 262 kills this season. With 158 blocks this year, Manning holds the record for most total blocks in a single season.

Oliver, a right side hitter from Plano, Texas, ranks third on the team in each of the categories of kills (311), blocks (114) and hitting percentage (.232). The junior posted a single-game season high 24 kills in a win over UCF earlier this season. In her last eight matches, Oliver has tallied at least 10 kills.

SMU tied for the most all-conference selections with Tulsa. The five selections are the most for the Mustangs since the move to C-USA and tie the 2001 team for most all-conference team members in a single-season.

The Mustangs will finish second in the league standings with one match to play at Tulsa on Saturday afternoon. In the first meeting between the teams, SMU battled the first-place Golden Hurricane to five sets at Moody Coliseum.

Since I don't know a whole lot about the selection process, does anyone thing that the team got overlooked in the tourney selection. With the record they put up, should they have gotten an at large bid?

Well, Tulsa's RPI is 26, SMU is 47, and the next best C-USA team is Houston at 90.

So, I don't think SMU can be too upset about the conference only getting one invitation.

Sounds like a good goal for next year though!
