Fjortoft Named C-USA Athlete of the Week
Senior earns her second award of the season

Oct. 4, 2011

IRVING, Texas (C-USA/SMU) – SMU’s Silje Fjortoft was named Conference USA Female Cross Country Athlete of the Week by the league office, today, for the second time this season.

Fjortoft, a senior from Orsta, Norway, won her third gold medal of the season this past weekend at the Notre Dame Invitational in South Bend, Ind. She battled against 40 mph winds, a muddy course, and 224 other runners from 27 other prestigious universities—eight of them ranked—to win the 5K Blue Division race with a time of 16:54. So far this season, Fjortoft has won the gold medal at every event she has participated in.

The Mustangs will be back in action when they travel to Fayetteville, Ark., on Oct. 15 for the Chile Pepper Invitational.

225 total runners? Wow - that is impressive. Another great example of one of the athletes in the "other sports" out there doing a wonderful job representing SMU. Congratulations!
