Women's Soccer - SMU vs. Marshall

Postby DanFreibergerForHeisman » Thu Oct 13, 2011 8:15 pm

The Mustangs are back in action Friday night at Westcott against Marshall with a 7pm start.

There are only two more home games this year (Friday night and Sunday afternoon) so SMU needs to make sure to take all six points this weekend to keep pace in the conference race.

Currently, the top of C-USA looks like this:

1. 5-0-1 16 Memphis
1. 5-0-1 16 Colorado College
3. 4-1-1 13 SMU
3. 4-1-1 13 UTEP
5. 3-1-2 11 UCF
6. 3-2-1 10 Rice
7. 2-3-1 7 Tulsa
8. 1-3-2 5 Marshall

If SMU can win both home matches this weekend, we could be in the position to control our own destiny to finish second in the conference and get that crucial bye in the conference tournament. Friday night features UCF at Rice and UTEP at Memphis. Sunday afternoon features Colorado College at Memphis. UTEP and Colorado College still have to play each other as well.

It is obviously way too early to be looking too far ahead - but SMU can really put itself in a great position by taking care of business at home this weekend.

As has been the case most of the past month, the big questions revolve around the health of the team. It will be interesting to see who is fit for Friday night.

It is also naturally a huge weekend for the seniors - Courtney Webb, Kaitlyn Eidson, and Katherine Cox. Hopefully they will finish off their SMU home careers on a high note. They certainly deserve it.

SMU is triumphant tonight with a 2-1 victory over the Thundering Herd.

Kenzie Scovill scored in the first half giving SMU a 1-0 lead at the break. Marshall scored an early goal in the second half (bad goal from the SMU perspective), but Courtney Smith and her golden left foot rescued the Ponies with just under 10 minutes left as Smith scored directly from a corner.

Results around C-USA were also really nice for SMU tonight. UAB beat Colorado College 1-0, Memphis beat UTEP 3-0, and UCF beat Rice 1-0.

SMU is now tied for second place in the conference and we control our own destiny to remain second.

1. 6-0-1 19 Memphis
2. 5-1-1 16 SMU
2. 5-1-1 16 Colorado College
4. 4-1-2 14 UCF
5. 4-2-1 13 UTEP
6. 3-3-1 10 Tulsa
6. 3-3-1 10 Rice

What a fantastic night for the Mustangs.

The Marshall game itself was way on the frustrating side. Once again SMU had tons and tons of chances but just couldn't get that extra goal to make it comfortable - but the team found a way to get it done in the end.

SMU plays East Carolina Sunday afternoon at 2pm at Westcott - and it is Senior Day. It was a nice touch to see 2, 17, and 21 painted on the side of the field tonight for Cox, Eidson, and Webb.

Way to go Mustangs!!! Looks like they're now in 2nd place in Conference USA. Great job.
With leading scorer Scovill out now due to separated shoulder from last night's game, Ponies may be relying on their defense to do the scoring off of set pieces.

It was so great to see the whole team healthy Friday night. Clarke was back and played 25 minutes, and Elliott played 80 minutes.

It was a shame to see Scovill go down. Now it will be up to Redman, Elliott, Hartweck, and Lewis to step up and put some balls in the net if Scovill is out for any appreciable amount of time.
