Women's Soccer - SMU vs. Tulsa

Postby DanFreibergerForHeisman » Thu Oct 27, 2011 6:46 pm

The Mustangs have their final regular season game at Tulsa Friday night at 6. SMU will clinch the 3rd spot in the C-USA standings with a win. Other results could drop SMU to the 4th seed depending on UCF's result at Southern Miss Friday night, although anything other than a UCF win would be a total shock in that one...

Current standings:

1. 28 (9-0-1) Memphis (x)
2. 22 (7-2-1) Colorado College (x)
3. 19 (6-3-1) SMU (x)
4. 18 (5-2-3) UCF (x)
5. 14 (4-4-2) Tulsa (x)
5. 14 (4-4-2) UTEP (x)
7. 13 (4-5-1) Rice
8. 12 (4-5-0) East Carolina
-----------
9. 10 (3-6-1) Houston
10. 8 (2-6-2) Marshall
11. 7 (2-6-1) UAB
12. 4 (1-8-1) Southern Miss

Note: Memphis is at UAB and Marshall is at ECU tonight. ECU and UAB have their makeup game Sunday.

SMU found some offensive life in the second half against UTEP in our previous game - let's hope it continues!

This game is huge since a win would keep SMU on the opposite side of the tournament bracket from both Memphis and UCF.

Go Ponies!

Memphis beat UAB 2-0 and ECU beat Marshall 2-1:

1. 31 (10-0-1) Memphis (x)
2. 22 (7-2-1) Colorado College (x)
3. 19 (6-3-1) SMU (x)
4. 18 (5-2-3) UCF (x)
5. 15 (5-5-0) East Carolina
6. 14 (4-4-2) Tulsa (x)
6. 14 (4-4-2) UTEP (x)
8. 13 (4-5-1) Rice
-----------
9. 10 (3-6-1) Houston
10. 8 (2-7-2) Marshall
11. 7 (2-7-1) UAB
12. 4 (1-8-1) Southern Miss

It looks like we will get Tulsa, UTEP, or ECU in the first round.

SMU in red. Keepers in silver/black.

Starting lineup:

Webb; Smith, Cox, Eidson, Hartweck; Baum, Clarke; Elliott, Redman, Gaines, Lewis

Can't believe we will really be in a 4-2-4 as listed, but I guess we will know soon...

UCF did beat Southern Miss 2-0 so we have to win tonight to finish 3rd.

SMU in a very offensive set tonight. It's almost a 4-1-5 with Rikki Clarke showing no shyness in moving forward. The defense also doesn't seem to be a bit concerned about leaving three in the back either, as Smith and Cox have been making runs as well.

Briana Gaines makes it 1-0 on a beautiful header directly off a long free kick from Courtney Smith! Great play.

2-0 SMU! Clarke draws a foul just outside the box. Baum takes the free kick and the Tulsa keeper makes a couple of nice saves but the second shot was in before the save.

The credited it as an own goal against Tulsa. Looked like Elliott might have a claim for it.

Tulsa makes it 2-1 at 20:29.

The camera missed it - but the announcers described it as right in the upper 90 and virtually impossible to save.

To file away in the "strange things I have seen in soccer" category. The starting Tulsa keeper was letting a defender take the goal kicks. Then they replaced their keeper with a girl wearing a brace on her kicking leg - but she is taking the goal kicks and they are only going about 20 yards...

End of the first half. 2-1 SMU.

Stats pretty even, but SMU had certainly had most of the run of play.

Shots: SMU 4, Tulsa 5
Shots on goal: SMU 4, Tulsa 3
Corners: SMU 2, Tulsa 1
Fouls: SMU 6, Tulsa 6

Both of SMU's goals are on set pieces. It sure would be nice to get one in the run of play tonight going into the tournament.

The second SMU goal won't stay an own goal. I think the scorers panicked since it got kind of crazy and just put down as an OG to get it on the scoresheet.

Nice half by SMU though!

Sounds like they have given the second SMU goal to Elliott which is what it looked like live. No word if there are any assists yet.
