Men's Soccer - SMU vs. South Carolina (C-USA Semifinal)

Postby DanFreibergerForHeisman » Thu Nov 10, 2011 9:31 pm

SMU takes on top seed South Carolina at 5pm Friday in the semifinals of the C-USA Tournament. The other semifinal features UAB and UCF.

Obviously, Arthur Ivo was the star of the game Wednesday with his three goals, but the whole team really played well for the majority of the game.

The shocking thing Wednesday was the absence of Juan Castillo. Obviously the SC coaches are smart enough to at least look at the box score so this shouldn't be spoiling any secrets or anything at this point. It will be interesting to see if he can go Friday. Castillo's absence gave some other players minutes at forward, and also shifted Robbie Derschang to the right side. The shift of Derschang appeared to limit his shooting, but it also increased his passing as he was feeding Ivo all night long with some nice passes - including a beautiful assist on the fourth goal. Tyler Engel had a nice game with a goal and an assist, and Zach Barnes also pitched in with two assists.

SMU beat the Gamecocks in 2OT in Columbia earlier this season when Arthur Ivo scored on a free kick in the 102nd minute. The way this season has gone and as close as the teams at the top of C-USA appear to be this one will likely be a close and exciting game as well.

And, to reuse the fun fact from Wednesday, this will now be SMU's fifth game on Tulsa's field this season, and it will be South Carolina's first. The familiarity with the surroundings can only help the Mustangs.

A win puts us in the final on Sunday and the game will be on television! How cool would that be!

GO PONIES!!!!

GOAL SMU!

Ben Hill from T.J. Nelson - shot through a crowd from around 20 yards out after SMU collected a clearance following a corner.

26:21 gone in the 1st.

SC has missed just wide twice in the past couple of minutes...

Still 1-0 SMU.

Halftime. 1-0 SMU.

Only one shot on goal in the entire game so far...

Shots: SMU 2, SC 5
Shots on goal: SMU 1, SC 0
Corners: SMU 4, SC 2
Fouls: SMU 8, SC 6

As the stats show, it was a pretty even half.

Well my Huskies just beat Louisville 1-0 in the Big East Semi. Now it's time for SMU to advance as well! Go Mustangs!
