Fidone Named C-USA Golfer Of The Week

Feb. 22, 2012

IRVING, Texas (CUSA/SMU) – SMU freshman Sam Fidone carded a five-under 211 at the John A. Burns Intercollegiate at Turtle Bay Resort in Kahuku, Hawai’i, and has been named Conference USA Golfer of the Week. Fidone placed third in a stacked field that featured 14 ranked golfers and five teams ranked among the nation’s top 25, another top 40 team and a NCAA Division II top 10 team.

Fidone finished the tournament tied for third place at 5-under, carding a season-low 211, nine shots better than his previous low. The third-place finish was the highest individual finish for an SMU golfer this season. In round one, the freshman shot a season-low round of 68, but shaved one stroke off of that in the second round by carding a 67 to end the second day tied for the lead at 9-under par, tied with No. 53 ranked Julia Suri of Duke, as SMU sat in second place. Fidone had 11 birdies in his first two rounds. This is Fidone’s first Golfer of the Week award of the season and for his career.

SMU will be in Palm Desert, Calif., this weekend as the team competes in the Wyoming Desert Classic on Feb. 25-26.
