DALLAS - The No. 16 SMU men's soccer team tied Campbell, 1-1, in the season opener on Friday night at Westcott Field. With the draw, both teams move to 0-0-1 on the season.

Freshman Eddie Puskarich put the Mustangs on the board with his goal in the 54th minute. After receiving a feed from fellow freshman Leobardo Vazquez, Puskarich fired a bullet from 25 yards out across the goal, off the crossbar and in for a 1-0 SMU lead.

Campbell's Ricki Gaez leveled the score with his tally in the 63rd minute. Mitchell Cardenas crossed the ball from the left side into to box to Gaez who headed it home.

Mustang goalkeeper Jaime Ibarra had a strong night in net, making eight saves on the night. In the 29th minute, Keegan Terry launched a shot from 12 yards out, forcing Ibarra to make a diving save and knock the ball just wide. Less than 10 minutes later, Ibarra stepped up again as Cardenas sent a free kick from 40 yards headed toward the far upper 90 before Ibarra punch it up over the crossbar for the save.

SMU heads to Tulsa, Okla., to compete in the Hurricane Classic over Labor Day weekend. The Mustangs face No. 5 USF on Aug. 31. The Bulls advanced to the Elite Eight last season after posting a 13-4-4 mark and going undefeated in BIG EAST regular season play. On Sept. 2, SMU takes on No. 6 New Mexico. The Lobos were undefeated in 2011 with an 18-0-4 record, spent several weeks as the top-ranked team in the country and fell to USF in the Sweet 16 on penalty kicks.
