Women’s Golf Inks In-State Duo For 2016-17
Texans Wright And Summers Choose SMU

Nov. 12, 2015

DALLAS (SMU) – Faith Summers and Kenzie Wright signed National Letters of Intent to join the SMU women’s golf program, SMU women’s golf head coach Jeanne Sutherland announced today. The Texas duo comes to an SMU program that is coming off a runner-up finish at the American Athletic Conference Championships in 2015 and has advanced to the NCAA Regionals for three straight seasons.

“We signed two great players, but more importantly, we signed two great young women,” Sutherland said. “These two are both on a steady rise to becoming the best, and I won’t be surprised if they help us win an NCAA Championship. That is their stated goal, and we have the ability and the support to do it here. They both work extremely hard and have a positive approach to their games.”

Summers and Wright will be the first class to call Trinity Forest Golf Club home, and that alone should help them achieve their goals according to Sutherland.

“It will be the best practice facility in the nation and the best golf course in Texas. I believe in the vision of our developers and Coore and Crenshaw. With this facility, our ability to train and play on a tough track will prepare our players to be ready for anything.”

The 2014-15 UIL IV 26-6A District Champion, Summers earned All-Region Team honors this season, adding to her 2013-14 All-District honors. While serving as her team captain at Ronald Reagan High School, Summers is also a leader in her Fellowship of Christian Athletes chapter and is a member of the PALS (Peer Assistance – Leadership – Serving) program.

Summers added a win at the Lake Travis Invitational to her resume, as well as runner-up honors at the 2015 TJGT Tournament of Champions. She also placed third (67-70-73) at the UIL Texas Swing for the Cure event.

Sutherland on Summers:

“Faith is an athletic player with great power. Her pro is Tim Hobby, who has led her to understand the game within the game and post low scores. She will continue to grow as a player at SMU and has the ability to grow into one of the best players in the nation.”

A student at the Jim McLean Junior Golf Academy, Wright has continued to improve in the individual rankings with notable wins at the AJGA Payne Stewart Championship (69-73-70) and TaylorMade Junior Open, as well as six total victories at TJGT Championships and AJGA Qualifiers.

Wright posted women’s course record 65 at The Bridges G.C. in Gunter, Texas, and has shot 67 in competition. She also placed fourth (72-71) at the 2015 Texas Women’s Open and fifth (70-77-69) at the Texas State Girls Championship.

Sutherland on Wright:

“Kenzie will continue to improve under the guidance of her pro Joey Wuertemberger and has a great desire to help SMU win. She is a steady player who carries a great attitude and never gives up on a round. She has high goals within the game and for her future and our job will be to help her achieve those goals.”

The Mustangs closed out the fall portion of their schedule with three top-five finishes, including a championship performance at the Marilynn Smith/Sunflower Invitational in Kansas in September. The 2016 spring season kicks off at the Florida State Match Up in Tallahassee, Feb. 12-14. Five additional tournaments are slated for the spring, including the DAC/SMU Invitational held in Dallas, before the Mustangs take on the field at the American Athletic Conference Championship in Hammock Beach, Florida, April 17-19.
