Mustangs Defeat Utah Valley, 2-0, Advance To NCAA Tournament Second Round
SMU Faces Denver Sunday at 6 PM CT

Nov. 19, 2015

DALLAS (SMU) – Goals from Brenden Lee and Idi Camara propelled the SMU men’s soccer team to a 2-0 victory over Utah Valley Thursday night in the first round of the NCAA Tournament at Westcott Field. The Mustangs take on Denver in the second round on Sunday at 6 p.m. CT at CIBER Field in Denver, Colorado.

The Mustangs got the their first strike in the 24th minute after Mauro Cichero’s shot deflected off the Utah Valley goalkeeper and Brenden Lee was there for the follow up. The goal was Lee’s 6th of the season and the assist was Cichero’s 8th.

SMU’s insurance goal came in the 61st minute after Camara collected a pass from Lee and shot it passed the Utah Valley goalkeeper.

“I thought we played relatively well,” Head Coach Kevin Hudson said. “It wasn’t our best performance of the year but it was a difficult opponent and we continued to put the ball in difficult spots and generated a lot of chances. NCAA Tournament games are never easy so the boys did a good job.”

The Mustangs outshot the Wolverines, 12-11, Cichero leading the way with four. Taylor Curtis and Camara attempted two shots apiece while Jared Rice, Stanton Garcia, Bryce Clark and Lee tallied one shot each to round out the total.

SMU goalkeeper Michael Nelson made three saves of the three shots on goal Utah Valley attempted. Wolverines goalkeeper Derek Wilcox tallied two saves of the four shots on goal he faced.

The Mustangs head to Denver, Colorado to take on Denver on Sunday at 6 p.m. CT at CIBER Field. Denver finished the season with an overall record of 15-0-3 and earned a first round bye in the NCAA Tournament.
