Five Mustangs earn all-conference accolades

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (SMU/AAC) – Five Mustangs earned All-American Athletic Conference awards, and Lisa Seifert was named American Athletic Conference Coach of the Year after the SMU volleyball team won a program-record 27 matches. The Mustangs went 17-3 in The American to win the regular-season title and advance to the NCAA Volleyball Championship for the first time in school history.

Avery Acker was named conference Player of the Year, and earned the second Setter of the Year award of her career. Morgan Heise was named Libero of the Year for the second straight season, and Janelle Giordano joined the duo on the All-American Athletic Conference First Team. Cailin Bula and Abbey Bybel were each named to the second team, earning the second all-conference awards of their careers.

For Seifert, it is the second Coach of the Year award of her career. The only coach in SMU’s program history has more than 300 wins, including 53 in the last two seasons, setting a new mark for most wins in both years. She was also named Western Athletic Conference Coach of the Year in 2003.

Acker finished the regular season with an NCAA-best 12.53 assists per set, and set a conference record with 67 assists in a five-set win against TCU, earning AVCA National Player of the Week accolades. The senior from Poth, Texas, became the third player in SMU history with 4,000 career assists, and ranks second all-time at SMU with 4,280.

Heise broke her own SMU single-season record with 706 digs in the regular season, averaging 6.14 per set, ranking second in the NCAA in both categories. The junior from Hempstead, Texas, was named conference Defensive Player of the Week seven times, including four straight weeks, and matched her career high with 38 digs at Temple.
Giordano broke both the SMU and American Athletic Conference single-season records with 185 blocks, second in the NCAA this season. She also tied The American single-match record with 13 blocks at UCF, and set a three-set match record with 12 blocks against Cincinnati. The junior from Keller, Texas, led the Mustangs with a .394 attack percentage, scoring 293 kills.

Bybel led SMU with 346 kills and also had 301 digs. She eclipsed 1,000 career digs this season, and matched her career highs with 17 kills against USF and 17 digs against Arizona. The senior from White Oak, Texas, had 10 double-doubles this season. Bula was second on the team with 298 kills, hitting .269. A senior from Austin, Texas, Bula scored a career-high 20 kills against Tulsa and scored at least 10 kills 13 times.

The Mustangs face Purdue in the first round of the NCAA Championship in Austin, Texas, Thursday at 4:30 p.m.
