HOUSTON (SMU) – The SMU women’s swimming and diving team made it three-for-three in relay action, winning the 200-yard freestyle relay on night two of the American Athletic Conference Championship at the CRWC Natatorium on the campus of the University of Houston. The Mustangs posted the top time in the 800 free and 200 medley relays on night one.

The foursome of Hannah Rogers, Tara-Lynn Nicholas, Marne Erasmus and Vicky Cunningham turned in a 1:31.02 for the win shortly after all four swam in the Championship Final of the 50-yard freestyle. This is the third-consecutive year the Mustangs have won the event. SMU made up half the field in the 50, with Rogers clocking a 22.65 for runner-up honors and the Mustangs’ highest finish. Erasmus (22.88), Nicholas (23.03) and Cunningham (23.12) finished fifth, sixth and seventh, respectively.

In preliminary action of the event, Rogers continued under the NCAA B-cut pace with a personal-best 22.58, while Nicholas and Cunningham posted their first B standards of the season.

Individual medley specialist Kirsty McLauchlan improved on her 2:02.68, and second place preliminary time, to win the 200 IM in a career-best time of 2:00.95. This is the junior’s second individual medley conference championship, as she won the 400 distance in 2015 and will swim that event tomorrow.

Classmate Ursa Bezan also competed in the event’s Championship Final, earning seventh-place points. In the Consolation Final, Adrienn Santa took the top spot with a personal-best 2:02.92, and Anna Volchkov finished fourth.

The evening began with the 500-yard freestyle with a pair of Mustangs in Maddie Hoch and Alexandra Manasso competing in the ‘A’ Final. Hoch made it to the podium with her third-place performance, while Manasso secured eighth-place points. In the ‘B’ Final, Anna Cheesbrough was third, once again besting her career mark with a 4:57.71.

Lauren Lamb represented the Mustangs on the 1-meter, securing four points toward the team score with a 191.25 and fifth place in the Consolation Final. Lamb will have tomorrow off before competing in platform on Saturday.

In the team scores, the Mustangs hold an 18-point advantage over second-place Connecticut, and Tulane rounds out the top half of the field at 226.50. Host Houston sits fourth at 226, Cincinnati is fifth at an even 200 and East Carolina is sixth with 182.50 points.
