McCurdy Ties For Fifth, Mustangs Sixth At SunTrust Gator Invite

March 6, 2016

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (SMU) – Junior Lindsey McCurdy shot 5-over (215) finishing in a two-way tie for fifth place on the individual leaderboard to help lead the Mustangs to a sixth place finish at the SunTrust Gator Women’s Invitational on Sunday. The No. 34 Mustangs finished the three-round, two-day event at 883, just two strokes out of the top five.

No. 8 and host Florida won the 13-team field going 22-over (862), while No. 18 Florida State (873) and No. 44 Ohio State (876) finished second and third, respectively.

The top-five finish was the second for McCurdy this season, and the highest placement for her during the spring portion of the schedule. McCurdy opened with an even-par first round and went on to shoot 5-over in three rounds.

“Lindsey really had a great tournament, start to finish,” head coach Jeanne Sutherland said. “I’m proud of what she was able to do out there this weekend.”

Senior Jenny Haglund (72-74-74—220) finished tied for 16th in the 75-player field, and classmate Alexandra Rossi (72-75-77—224) was in the top 30, finishing tied for 28th. Freshman Brigitte Dunne bounced back in the second round, going 2-over, and finished tied for 43rd (228). Junior Katie Page tied for 54th posting a three-round 231, having her best showing of 1-over in round two as well.

N.C. State’s Rachael Taylor took home medalist honors, shooting even par, while Katja Pogacar of Ohio State was second at +3.

“We’re going to come out of this much better prepared for tough course set-ups in the future,” Sutherland said. “We’re a team that’s really good at making par, but we fell just short of that today.”

The Mustangs are back in action on Friday for the three-day Clover Cup in Mesa, Arizona.
