SMU, Smotherman Finish Tied For Eighth at Southern Highlands
Fifth Top 10 Finish for SMU This Season; Smotherman's Fourth Straight Top 10 finish

LAS VEGAS (SMU) – Two Mustangs finished among the top-30 on the individual leaderboard, as the SMU men’s golf team wrapped up the Southern Highlands Collegiate Wednesday. Austin Smotherman and Ryan Burgess earned spots among the top competitions in the country at the top-ranked collegiate tournament hosted at the Southern Highlands Golf Club. The Mustangs tied No. 1 Illinois for eighth place (+23, 887) after shooting a 16-over 304 final round. Southern California won the tournament at five-over (869). Florida took second place (+9, 873), while Oklahoma rounded off the top three at 15-over (879). The Mustangs have finished eighth or better in every tournament this season.

“Today’s conditions were extremely tough and our competition was just as tough. Our guys had an opportunity to have a great finish if they would have performed better on the back nine,” SMU head coach Jason Enloe said.

“Overall we had a great experience, however the guys are disappointed in the way they finished,” Enloe added. "They expected to have a much better final round, we just fell a bit short today. Hopefully playing a difficult course like Southern Highlands will prepare us for our upcoming events.”

Smotherman finished tied for eighth in the 78-player field, carding a three-day 2-over 218. In a six way tie, the Loomis, Calif., native most notably matched with top-ranked Beau Hossler from Texas and seventh-ranked Rico Hoey from USC. In the third round, he fired two of his 10 accumulative birdies and finished with a 75 (+3). The senior has now finished four-consecutive tournaments in the top 10.

Burgess finished the tournament tied for 27th with a three-round 223 (+7). The senior carded seven birdies over the three-day tournament, including one on Wednesday. The Rancho Santa Fe, Calif., native shot a 9-over 81 on day three. Burgess has now finished in the top 30 in four of five tournaments this season.

SMU’s top third-round performer was Gray Townsend, who shot 1-over par (73) in the final round. The sophomore tallied four birdies on the final day, including three on the tougher back nine. Townsend finished with five total birdies and 36 pars for a total tally of 12-over par (228). The Winston-Salem, N.C., native finished 55th.

Andrew Buchanan finished the tournament tied for 42nd (+9, 225), with nine birdies and an eagle. The junior shot a third round 80 (+8). Alex Higgs shot a four-over 76 on the final day to finish the tournament with a 16-over 232. The junior tallied four birdies over the three days.

The SMU men’s golf team returns to action Thursday, March 24 in Palo Alto, Calif., at The Goodwin. The Mustangs look to defend their title after finishing tied for first (with UAB) last season. The three-day tournament is hosted by Stanford.
