SMU Collects Two Wins On Sunday
Mustangs Have Seven Shutout Wins On The Year

March 13, 2016

DALLAS (SMU) – The SMU men’s tennis team picked up two wins on Sunday, beating both Prairie View A&M and Northern Colorado, 7-0 and 6-1 respectively inside Turpin Stadium.

Down a player, Prairie View forfeited on court three in doubles play and court six in singles play. The duo of Markus Kernerand Samm Butler claimed the doubles match 6-4 to give SMU a 2-0 lead.

In singles action, Tony Russell got the scoring going for SMU with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Freddy Quintero. Nate Lammonsclaimed the fourth point of the match after a 6-1, 6-0 win over Christian Waldron.

“A very good day and I’m pleased by how we played in two tough matches,” said Head Coach Carl Neufeld. “Playing two teams on the same day is not easy and we’re happy that the guys are playing their personal best at this point in the year.”

The Mustangs had a brief break before hosting Northern Colorado. The pair of Kerner and Butler picked up the first doubles match, 6-1 over Hayden Cramer and Eric Schuermans. After dropping the doubles match on court one, SMU was able to win on court three to take a 1-0 lead.

Kerner pushed the Mustangs lead to 2-0 after a 6-2, 6-0 win over Cassell King. Slobodkins earned a 6-3, 6-2 win over Hayden Cramer, giving SMU a 3-0 lead. Ronald Slobodchikov went on to give SMU its fourth point of the match and the win after a 6-0, 6-4 win over Connor Finerty.

The Mustangs will be back in action on Tuesday when they welcome UMBC. Doubles play is set to begin at 6 p.m. CT.
