Mustangs Win Clover Cup Championship
Haglund, Dunne Finish Inside Top 10

March 13, 2016

MESA, Ariz. (SMU) — The SMU women’s golf team fired a 7-under in the third round to win the Clover Cup championship by eight strokes over second place TCU. The Mustangs were second heading into the final day, but overtook the Horned Frogs behind a pair of 68’s from senior Jenny Haglund and junior Lindsey McCurdy. Overall, SMU finished 6-under 858.

“Lindsey and Jenny going out there today and shooting 68’s was really clutch, but overall it was a great team effort. Everybody really contributed this weekend, and I’m really happy with our play and am proud of this team,” head coach Jeanne Sutherland said.

Haglund shot par or better in the final two rounds, giving her a three-round 213, good for a two-way tie for fifth on the individual leaderboard. The 213 is one stroke shy of Haglund’s season low 212 from the Westbrook Invitational in February. This is the fifth time the senior has posted a top-10 finish this season, and the third time in the top five.

Freshman Brigitte Dunne also finished inside the top 10 on the individual leaderboard carding a 1-over 217, tying for 10th. Dunne carded a 1-over on the first day of competition before shooting even par in rounds two and three. The top-10 finish is the first of the freshman’s young career.

McCurdy turned in an unblemished scorecard on the final day, including birdies on holes two, four, five and 15. Overall, McCurdy finished tied for 12th at 2-over 218. Joining McCurdy at 12th was junior Katie Page. Page opened the tournament with a 69 and concluded action +1 in the final round.

Senior Alexandra Rossi opened the tournament at -2 and went on to finish with a three-round 223 to tie for 20th.Classmate Alex Celli finished fifth amongst individuals competing with a 2-over in the final round for a three-day total of 235.

“We had some fun before the round today and went out there and played really loose and focused,” Sutherland said.

The pre-round preparation fared well for the Mustangs as the 7-under was the tournament’s low round. The three-round 858 was also the second lowest total in the tournament's five-year history behind Colorado's 9-under 855 in 2012. Overall, this is the Mustangs’ second tournament victory of the 2015-16 season, and sixth top-five performance.

TCU's Brooke Graebe earned medalist honors, finishing one stroke ahead of Oklahoma's Rylee Pedigo at 6-under 210.

SMU is back in action April 1-2 when it hosts the DAC/SMU Invitational in Dallas.

I am not trying to be a troll, but when was the last time the Women's golf team won anything? Frankly, I cannot remember any wins by the women's team.

Either way, it is great news. Hopefully, it is a sign of many more victories to come.

Good. There is no reason that we shouldn't have a very good women's golf team.

That final round 7 under as a team is really impressive. This SMU team had 2 under par rounds in this event. Only 3 other teams in the field of 17 had days where their team collectively was under par. SMU's final round 281 was 3 shots better than TCU's opening 284 and was the best single day performance by any team. To do it at crunch time is even more impressive. Great job, ladies!
