Mustangs Have 10 Shutout Victories On The Year

March 26, 2016

DALLAS (SMU) – The SMU men’s tennis team won its fourth consecutive match, sweeping No. 5 Oklahoma State inside Greenwood Tennis Center at Stillwater, Okla. SMU’s last win against a top five opponent came against No. 4 TCU, on April 18, 2001, by a score of 4-3.

The Mustangs opened doubles play with the first victory on court one by the No. 25 doubles pair juniors Hunter and Yates Johnson over No. 9 Arjun Kadhe and Julian Cash, 6-1. The pair of junior Tony Russell and sophomore Ronald Slobodchikovgave SMU an early 1-0 lead after defeating Jurence Mendoza and Lukas Finzelberg 6-3.

“A tremendous win against a top five team in Oklahoma State, I’m very proud of guys performance especially beating a team who only lost one other time before today’s match,” said Head Coach Carl Neufeld.

Senior Nate Lammons started fast for the Mustangs defeating the No. 48 singles player Cash, 7-5, 6-3. Hunter who is the No. 73 singles player pushed SMU’s lead to 3-0 after beating No. 121 singles player Kadhe, 6-4, 6-3. Russell earned the victory for the Mustangs after his 7-6 (7-3), 6-3 win over Finzelberg.

“This win gives us a lot of confidence as the season progresses and hopefully we can parlay that into the final month of the season and postseason play,” Neufeld said.

The Ponies are back in action in their final home match of the season when they host UT Arlington on Wednesday at 6 p.m. CT. Senior Nate Lammons will be honored after the match.
