Mustangs Reach Semifinals For The 10th time In 12 Seasons

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (SMU) – The third-seeded SMU Mustangs sweeps the sixth-seeded UCF Knights, 4-0, in the American Athletic Conference Championship Quarterfinals on Friday morning at Dunavant-Wellford Tennis Center in Memphis, Tenn.

SMU has now won at least one match in a conference tournament in 19 of the last 23 seasons, and reached the semifinals 10 times in the last 12 years.

The Mustangs took the opening doubles point with wins at the No. 1 and No. 2 positions. Juniors Hunter and Johnson claimed the first doubles match, 6-2, over Inaki Espindola and Chris Barrus. With the win the Johnson twins earn their 25th doubles victory on the year, tying them for second-most in a season in program history. Senior Nate Lammons and junior Markus Kerner then sealed doubles with a 6-3 win over Tyler Pate and Reece Acree.

Sophomore Samm Butler continued the SMU’s momentum into singles play as he defeated Jose Sangroniz, 6-1, 6-1. Sophomore Ronald Slobodchikov also took down his opponent, Nicolo De Fraia is straight sets, 6-3, 6-0. Lammons the No. 105 singles player clinched the match for the Mustangs after coming back from losing the first set and winning the next two sets over Espindola, 2-6, 6-4, 6-1.

SMU will take on No. 23 Tulsa on Saturday at 9 a.m. CT in the semifinals of the American Athletic Conference Championship. The Mustangs swept the Golden Hurricane, 4-0, on March 6.
