Mustangs Selected For NCAA Women's Golf Bryan Regional
SMU Earns No. 9 Seed At Regional

April 25, 2016

INDIANAPOLIS (NCAA/SMU) – The SMU women’s golf team was selected as one of 18 teams to compete at the NCAA Women’s Golf Regional held in Bryan, Texas, at Traditions Club May 5-7, the NCAA Women’s Golf Selection Committee announced on Monday. The Regional is one of four held across the country.

Joining the 18 teams will be six individuals, all with the goal to qualify for the NCAA Championship held May 20-25 at the Eugene Country Club in Eugene, Oregon. The top six teams from each Regional will earn a Championship berth, as well as the top three individuals from non-qualifying teams. SMU is the No. 9 seed at the event.

“I’m really proud of this team for earning another trip to NCAAs,” said head coach Jeanne Sutherland. “This is an experience that you can never take for granted.”

The Regional bid is the eighth overall and fourth consecutive for the Mustangs, with the highest placement coming in 2004 when SMU tied for ninth at the tournament. The Mustangs are also seeking their first NCAA Championship appearance since 1992.

“I’d really love for my seniors to come full circle and make it to the Championship and get the experience that they deserve,” Sutherland added. “They bought in to what we had to offer them when we were ranked in the 100s and they really helped us build this program. I think it would be fitting for them to top off their careers by playing the Championships.”

SMU finished fourth at the 2016 American Athletic Conference Championship and is currently ranked 33rd in the latest edition of the Golfstat rankings. Senior Jenny Haglund and freshman Brigitte Dunne both finished top five at the Championship.

Overall, the Mustangs finished inside the top five on eight occasions during the 2015-16 season, including a pair of championship finishes at the Marilynn Smith/Sunflower Invitational and the Clover Cup. On March 31st, the Ponies reached their highest Golfstat ranking of 27th.

"This team can play with anyone in the country when they put their minds to it. Our goal of making it to the Championship is well within reach," Sutherland concluded.
