INDIANAPOLIS (NCAA/SMU) – The SMU men’s tennis team will make its first appearance in the NCAA Championship since 2008, when they go up against Washington on Saturday, May 14 at 10 a.m. CT at McLeod Tennis Center in Lubbock, Texas.

SMU stands at 20-8 overall and 3-1 in the American, marking it the 10th time in program history that the Mustangs finished with a 20-win season. SMU is coming off their semifinals finish in the American Athletic Conference Tournament where they’ve reached the semifinals of the conference tournament 10 times in the last 12 years.

“It’s a great feeling to be in the national tournament and I know the guys are really excited to play up at Texas Tech and it’s a great day for SMU tennis,” said Head Coach Carl Neufeld.

SMU had seven wins against ranked opponents, including wins against No. 5 Oklahoma State, No. 17 USF, No. 20 Tulsa and No. 35 Dartmouth. The Mustangs posted 12 shutout victories on the year, the most since 1999, when they had 13 shutout wins, finishing the season with a 28-5 mark and making it to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Championship.

The No. 101 singles player Nate Lammons leads the team with 25 singles wins, followed by the No. 72 singles player Hunter Johnson with 22 singles wins. In doubles play, the No. 27 duo of Hunter and Yates has a team best 27 doubles wins, while the No. 49 doubles pair of Lammons and Arkadijs Slobodkins racked up 14 doubles wins.

The Huskies went 17-9 overall and 3-4 in the Pac-12. Washington played 15 ranked opponents, and finished with a 6-9 mark. The Huskies advanced to the quarterfinals of the Pac-12 Conference Championship before losing to No. 17 California, 4-0. The Huskies are led by Jake Douglas who has 22 singles wins on the year and in doubles play the duo of Kawika Lam and Enzo Sommer who have nine victories on the year.

The winner between SMU and Washington will face the winner between No. 8-seed Texas Tech and New Mexico State on Sunday, May 15. For more information, visit www.NCAA.com
