Mustangs Sweep Washington, 5-0, Advance To NCAA Tournament Second Round
SMU Recorded Its 13th Shutout Victory Of The Year

LUBBOCK, Texas (SMU) - The SMU Mustangs sweep the Washington Huskies, 5-0, in the first round of the NCAA Championship on Saturday afternoon at the McLeod Tennis Center in Lubbock, Texas. Originally the match was set for a 10 a.m. CT start, but due to weather conditions the match was pushed back to a noon CT start.

The Mustangs took the opening doubles point with wins at the No. 2 and No. 3 positions. Sophomores Samm Butler andRonald Slobodchikov claimed the first doubles match, 6-4, over Jake Douglas and Gal Hakak. The No. 54 duo of senior Nate Lammons and junior Arkadijs Slobodkins sealed the doubles point for the Mustangs with a 7-6 (7-5) victory over Kawika Lam and Enzo Sommer.

"This was a great win over a good Washington team," said Head Coach Carl Neufeld. "We played exceptionally well, and I'm excited to see the improvements we continue to make especially during this time of the year. Tomorrow will be a great opportunity for us whether we play No. 8 Texas Tech or New Mexico State."

Slobodchikov carried his momentum into singles play as he defeated Sebastian Hawken in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4. Butler upped SMU's lead to 3-0 after taking down Hakak in straight sets as well, 6-2, 6-2. Lammons, the No. 112 singles player clinched the match for the Mustangs after a tough three-set match against Sommer, 6-2, 3-6, 6-1. Junior Yates Johnson also came up victorious after the match was decided, defeating Joao Barra, 6-3, 6-4.

The Mustangs will face the winner of No. 8 Texas Tech and New Mexico State on Sunday at 1 p.m. CT at the McLeod Tennis Center.
