Three Mustangs to represent SMU at nationals

LAWRENCE, Kan. (SMU) – Latessa Johnson and Tochi Nlemchi will compete at the 2016 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field National Championships after qualifying in their respective events at the NCAA Western Regional preliminaries Saturday at Rock Chalk Park in Lawrence, Kan. The two will join Lucija Cvitanovic at nationals in Eugene, Ore., June 8-11.

Johnson earned a spot in the 200m dash championships after finishing seventh in the Western region. The freshman clocked a 22.80 to finish second in heat three, one of the fastest 200m dash heats. The Dallas native recorded the fifth-fastest time among 45 competitors and topped two of the automatic bid winners. The 22.80 mark is the second-fastest time in program history.

“Sometimes it is hard to believe Tessa is just a freshman,” SMU head coach Cathy Casey said. “I have never seen an athlete compete with such confidence and poise in their first year. She continues to rise to the occasion no matter who she races. It will be exciting to see what this elite level talent can do in the finals in Eugene.”

On her final throw of the shot put, Nlemchi recorded a 16.58-meter hurl (54-4¾) to finish 10th in the West and earn her first trip to the NCAA National Championships. The mark is the seventh-farthest in program history and the second-farthest this season by a Mustang. The junior climbed three positions from her initial seeding of 13th.

“Tochi committed to qualifying to Eugene after just missing out last season,” Casey said. “Her hard work and mental strength have turned her into one of the best shot putters in the nation this year. This weekend she competed like the champion she is and earned a well-deserved ticket to the finals.”

Earlier in the day, Holly Archer recorded a 4:29.21 in the 1,500m run. Archer, a Bury Saint Edmunds, England, native, finished 30th in the West, 10 positions higher than her seed. In the shot put, Jacquetta Cannon tallied a 13.98-meter throw (45-10½) to finish 43rd in the West, one position higher than her seeding.

Cvitanovic skipped the preliminaries and advanced to the NCAA Championships because combined events (Heptathlon and Decathlon), are not contested at the Preliminary Round sites. Cvitanovic earned the 19th heptathlon seed after recording a lifetime-best 5,611 points at the American Athletic Conference Championship. She is the three-time reigning AAC heptathlon champion.
