To be selected to the first team, swimmers and divers must have achieved a grade point average of 3.50 or higher and have participated in their respective NCAA Swimming and Diving Championship. Honorable mention selections have similarly achieved a GPA of 3.50 and achieved a “B” time standard or competed at their respective qualifying meets.

Klein led the way earning first-team accolades after earning a 17th place finish on 3 meter at the 2016 NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships in Atlanta. Klein competed on both the 1 and 3 meter at Zone Championships, following a standout performance at the American Athletic Conference Championship where he took home Diver of the Year honors. He is also the current SMU and AAC record holder on both springboards.

Six additional men earned honorable mention status, including conference Swimmer of the Year Straughan. In his final season with the Mustangs, Straughan earned conference championships in the 100- and 200-yard butterfly, as well as the 100-yard backstroke, all events in which he registered NCAA provisional times. He was also a member of four championship relays.

Two-time individual conference champion in 2016 Scherubl posted B cuts in the 100-, 200- and 500-yard freestyles. On the relay side, he helped the Mustangs to three conference championships this season. He also holds SMU standards in both the 200 and 500 distances.

All-conference individual performers Popov and Krzyzaniak each posted multiple NCAA cuts, including Popov in breaststroke events and Krzyzaniak in backstroke events as well as the 200-yard freestyle. Rounding out the group was all-AAC relay performer Schenke. The freshman posted his time in the 500-yard freestyle.

On the diving side, senior Meinecke competed at Zone Championships in both the 1 and 3 meter springboard preliminaries.

Three Mustang women also made the honorable mention list, all of whom earned AAC individual honors this past season. Cunningham led the way with a pair of individual nods as well as four relay accolades, and her times in the 50-, 100- and 200-yard freestyles were all under the NCAA B standard.

Cheesbrough, who was under provisional standard in the 200-yard butterfly, earned all-conference honors for her runner-up finish in the event. The final Pony to make the list was freestyle honoree Hoch. The junior earned all-conference honors in the 500-yard freestyle and posted her NCAA cut in the 200 distance.

Both programs previously earned Scholar All-America team honors.
