Volleyball Adds Five To 2016 Roster

DALLAS (SMU) – The SMU volleyball program has added five freshmen to its 2016 roster, head coach Lisa Seifert announced today. The signing class includes a player at every position, including 6-3 middle blocker Meryn Kennedy, who finished with 135 blocks and 194 kills while hitting .464 as a senior at Allen High School.

"This is one of the largest classes we have ever brought to the Hilltop," explained Seifert. "While they are all very talented in their respective positions, the thing I am most excited about is that they understand and fit the program's culture. Needless to say, they will make a huge impact in our gym."

The Mustangs also signed Ashley Homan, a 6-0 outside hitter from Brenham High School, the same program which produced All-American Caroline Young. Ashtyn Richey, a 6-1 right side from Prosper High School, gives SMU a third 6-footer in the class, which also includes Kendall Patterson, a setter from Hebron High School in Carrollton, Texas, and Montana Watts, a libero from Boyd High School in McKinney, Texas.

Patterson led Hebron to the 2015 Texas 6A state championship, guiding the team to a 43-5 record overall, earning Texas Girls Coaching Association All-State first-team honors. Hebron won at least 30 matches in each of Patterson's final three seasons. Watts was named a TGCA All-State selection as a senior after leading Boyd to a 26-win season. She had 526 digs in 72 sets during her final prep campaign. Watts was a Max Preps High School All-America Third Team honoree as a senior, and was named a high school All-America award winner as a junior by Prepvolleyball.com. Watts earned Academic All-State accolades as a senior, and was named District Player of the Year three times.

Homan earned three letters at Brenham, finishing with 279 kills and a .403 attack percentage during her final season. She also eclipsed 300 kills in 2013, scoring 312 in 90 sets with a .375 attack percentage. Richey played at Pilot Point High School, before finishing her prep career at Prosper High School. Richey had her best season in 2013, scoring 323 kills with a .439 attack percentage. She also had 70 solo blocks and 88 total blocks during the 20-win season.

The Mustangs won the American Athletic Conference championship with a program-record 27 wins in 2015, and begin the 2016 season in Moody Coliseum August 26-27.

Nice looking class. Good to see some solid height across the board. 6'3" is a new thing for us.
