Volleyball Announces 2016 Schedule

DALLAS (SMU) – The SMU volleyball team, which won the 2015 American Athletic Conference championship, opens the 2016 season in Moody Coliseum Aug. 26 and 27, hosting the SMU DoubleTree Classic. The non-conference slate features tournaments at Arizona, N.C. State and TCU before the Mustangs begin their title defense against East Carolina at home Sept. 22.

SMU will play a home-and-home with each of the 10 conference opponents. The Mustangs will celebrate Senior Day Nov. 20 against Memphis before wrapping up the regular season with a road trip to Connecticut and Temple, Nov. 23 and 25.

The Mustangs set a program record with 27 wins last season, advancing to the NCAA Tournament after going 17-3 against league opponents to win the conference. Eight letterwinners return from the championship season, featuring three starters and back-to-back conference Libero of the Year, Morgan Heise. Janelle Giordano joined Heise on the AVCA All-Southeast Region and All-American Athletic Conference teams after setting an SMU and conference record with 188 blocks last season. Heise shattered her own SMU single-season record and set an AAC record with 721 digs.

Lisa Seifert, the 2015 AVCA Southeast Region Coach of the Year and conference Coach of the Year, brought in a signing class of five, one of the largest in program history. Last year's senior class included three all-conference starters, including All-American, 2015 conference Player of the Year and two-time conference Setter of the Year, Avery Acker.

The Arizona tournament looks good on paper with Arizona and Pepperdine, but North Carolina is the only team who finished ahead of us in the RPI and poll last season and we get them on a neutral court.

We can definitely run non-conference. Can't wait.

Go Ponies!
