Men’s Soccer Releases 2016 Schedule

DALLAS (SMU) – The 2015 American Athletic Conference regular season champion and NCAA Sweet 16 participant SMU men's soccer team has released its schedule for the 2016 season. Highlighted by 11 home matches at Westcott Field, SMU looks to gain the top spot in the league for the second straight season and earn the right to host the AAC Championships, Nov. 11 and 13.

The slate includes five NCAA Tournament teams from a season ago, including the Mustangs' Sweet 16 opponent Akron, as well as three additional selections from The American Conference.

SMU opens the season with a four-match homestand, starting with Michigan State (Aug. 26) and Incarnate Word (Aug. 29) and continues into the first week of September with Western Illinois (Sept. 2) and American (Sept. 4).

The first weekend of road matches takes the Mustangs to Rhode Island for contests against Providence, the 2015 Patriot League Tournament runner-up, and Brown on Sept. 9 and Sept. 11, respectively.

SMU closes out the month of September at Westcott Field with its last three non-conference matches, and its first AAC contest of 2016. On Sept. 16, West Coast Conference Champion and NCAA Second Round participant Santa Clara visits the Hilltop, before the Mustangs host a rematch of 2015's Sweet 16 game with Akron on Sept. 19.

Conference play begins on Sept. 24 when reigning AAC Tournament champion Tulsa comes to town, and the Mustangs play their last non-league match against Summit League runner-up Oral Roberts on Sept. 27.

Home conference matches include Temple (Oct. 8), Cincinnati (Oct. 23) and USF (Oct. 29), and the Mustangs hit the road for UCF (Oct. 1), Memphis (Oct. 15) and Connecticut (Nov. 5). Both USF and Connecticut also made NCAA Tournament appearances a season ago.

The Mustangs return 17 letterwinners from the 2015 season, including All-American performer and AAC Offensive Player of the Year Mauro Cichero and Goalkeeper of the Year Michael Nelson. SMU went 15-3-4 last season, which included a 7-0-1 mark in conference play.
