Nicol Fifth In 100-Meter Breaststroke Olympic Final

RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil (SMU) – SMU Mustang swimming alum Rachel Nicol earned herself a fifth-place finish in the 100-meter breaststroke at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games on Monday evening. Nicol, who is representing Canada at the Games, secured her finish clocking a personal-best 1:06.68 in the event final.

Nicol advanced as part of the top eight after posting a 1:06.73 in the second of two semifinals. In preliminary heats, Nicol registered a 1:06.85 to give her the 11th fastest time heading into semifinals.

This was Nicol's first trip to the Olympic Games, as she was one of two Canadians swimming in the event. She posted a second-place finish at the country's trials in April to secure her position on the team. Her 1:06.88 posted during trial prelims was the top time posted by a Canadian during qualification.

During her time at SMU, the Lethbridge, Alberta, native was a three-time All-America selection and holds the current program record in the 200-yard breaststroke. Nicol also won six individual conference championships, and was part of two conference championship relays. In all, she garnered 13 all-league honors.

Nicol is still in the running to swim the breaststroke leg on Canada's 4x100 medley relay on Friday. Canada qualified for the event as the No. 6 seed.
