SMU Falls to No. 22 Ole Miss Despite Continuous Offensive Threat

DALLAS (SMU) – The SMU women's soccer team generated 26 shots with 12 on goal, but the effort fell short as the Mustangs fell to No. 22 Ole Miss, 2-0, in its only exhibition match of the season. Twelve members of the squad posted at least one shot, including all starting forwards and midfielders.

"I think we played well," SMU head coach Chris Petrucelli said. "We created a lot of chances. Overall I thought the quality of our play was good. They scored two really good goals and are a quality team, but I thought our kids did really well."

Junior Lauren Guerra and redshirt-sophomore Vanessa Valadez led the team with four shots apiece. Valadez, a member of the 2015 American Athletic Conference All-rookie team, tallied three shots on goal, while Guerra managed two.

Newcomers Allie Thornton and Avery Ortmann recorded two and three shots, respectively, with all five shots combined on frame. Fellow freshman Katharine Herron clocked the full 90 for SMU, while recording one shot on goal.

"We had a lot of personnel questions so we used a lot of players and tried people in different places, we needed to see how the young players would react in this environment, and I think we accomplished that," Petrucelli said.

Despite allowing two goals, the SMU defense held the Rebels to only six shots during the game, and two in the entire second half.

In the 19th minute, Ole Miss' Addie Forbus found forward Gretchen Harknett on a cross, where Harknett shot and scored. In the 27th minute, midfielder CeCe Kizer hit a shot from 30-yards out placing it in the upper corner.

SMU hosts Rice Friday at 7 p.m. to open its regular season. The Mustangs hold a 12-6-2 all-time advantage over the Owls. Last season, the two squads tied 1-1.

Did anyone watch it? Did the play match the stats or the score?

Yes SMU was better than Ole Miss. Some of the freshman are really really good.
