Thornton Named to AAC Weekly Honor Roll
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (SMU/AAC) – Freshman forward Allie Thornton was named to the American Athletic Conference weekly honor roll, league officials announced Monday. The Arlington, Texas, native helped lead the Mustangs to a 2-0-0 record after scoring a team-high four goals, and recording an assist. The honor is her first collegiate conference accolade.
Thornton leads the team with nine points and eight shots on goal, and is tied with Vanessa Valadez for first with 11 shots. The forward is averaging a 72.7 shots on goal percentage (8-11), scoring on 36.4 percent of her shots (4-11).
In her collegiate debut against Northwestern State, Thornton scored two goals in 68 minutes of play, scoring in the 23rd minute after she was able to beat two defenders and a charging goalkeeper. In the 66th minute, Thornton weaved through defenders and scored her second of the game.
Making her second collegiate start in as many games, Thornton scored twice against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. The first of her two goals came in the 13th minute finishing a shot that rebounded off of Islanders goalkeeper Jordan Wainright. Valadez took the initial shot, which setup Thornton for the wide-open goal. In the 48th minute, Thornton posted her second goal of the game, scoring from 18 yards out, finishing a through ball from Katina Tsapos.
Next up, SMU heads to Bloomington, Indiana, for the Hoosier Challenge Cup. The Mustangs play Friday, Sept. 2 against Butler at 11:30 a.m. CT, before facing host-school Indiana Monday, Sept. 5.
