Freshman Homan Leads Volleyball To Win Against Sam Houston State

FORT WORTH, Texas (SMU) – Freshman Ashley Homanscored 11 kills in her first start to lead the SMU volleyball team to a 3-0 (25-19, 25-16, 27-25) win against Sam Houston State (6-6) in the opening match at the TCU Invitational. For the Mustangs (6-4), it was the fourth straight-set victory in the last five matches.

After cruising through the first two sets for a 2-0 lead, SMU found itself trailing 15-5 in the third set. The Mustangs scored the next four points, forcing Sam Houston State into a timeout. The Bearkats scored two of the next three points after the timeout, and extended the lead back to nine, 21-12, with a fourth set seeming to be a certainty.

Five straight Sam Houston State errors, including a pair at the end of unbelievable rallies, sent the momentum back to SMU's side. Kills by freshmen Homan and setter Kendall Patterson made the run seven-straight and the deficit just four, 22-18. Sam Houston State called its last timeout, but a 3-1 run after the break, with two kills from Homan, cut the lead to two, 23-21 Bearkats. A point later, it was set point for the Bearkats with a three-point advantage. SMU scored three straight, then fought off another set point before scoring three straight for a 27-25 win to end the match.

Lauren Mills recorded her second double-double of the season with 10 kills and 13 digs, and Janelle Giordanoadded nine kills and six blocks. Katie Hegarty added eight kills. The Mustangs hit .248 as a team, led by Homan's .425 attack percentage. SMU held Sam Houston State to a .065 attack percentage, scoring eight blocks with 58 digs. Morgan Heise had 17 digs to lead the SMU defense. Patterson finished with 38 assists on SMU's 44 kills and recorded seven digs.

SMU hit .333 as a team in the opening set, scoring 14 kills, and held Sam Houston State to a .028 attack percentage, forcing nine attack errors, including three blocks.

SMU took a 2-0 lead in the match with a 25-16 victory in the second set, led by Homan's five kills. The Mustangs scored four of the first five points, and extended the lead to as many as 11 points in the set. SMU out-scored the Bearkats 17-8 on the attack, hitting .289, and Heise had eight digs. Sophomore Kelly Brunstein came in at the end of the set, and posted a block to give SMU its 25th and set-winning point.
