DALLAS (SMU) – Six different Mustangs posted shots, with five logging shots on goal, as the SMU women's soccer team topped Saint Louis, 3-1, Friday night at Westcott Field. The Mustangs recorded 11 total shots with six on goal. SMU improves to 5-2-0, while the Billikens fall to 6-2-0.

Tied 1-1 at halftime, the Mustangs took a 2-1 lead in the 61st minute on the eventual game-winning goal by Claire Oates. On a free kick, senior defender Taylor Barg found Blair Thorpe in the far corner, who sent a cross into the goal box. Oates, a 6-foot midfielder, got above the defense and netted a header to break the tie. Oates now has three goals this season and 13 in her career. Thorpe and Barg each received an assist, the seventh and 11th of their careers, respectively.

Thorpe gave SMU a 3-1 lead in the 76th minute, converting a cross from Mary Meehan. Katharine Herron brought the ball up the near side before laying it off to Meehan. From the near corner, Meehan laced a ball into the goal box, where Thorpe collected and put it away. Thorpe now has three goals this season, while Meehan and Herron recorded their first career assists.

In the first half, freshman Allie Thornton gave SMU a 1-0 advantage in the 11th minute. From outside of the 18-yard box, redshirt sophomore Vanessa Valadez skied a cross to Thornton who drilled a volley into the net. The freshman now has eight goals and 17 points on the season, and has scored in each of the last two matches.

In the 25th minute, Saint Louis' Danielle Tolmais scored, to equalize the game at one apiece.

Defenders Barg and Jessica Cooley both played a full 90. The SMU defense held Saint Louis to eight total shots, allowing only four on goal. Goalkeeper Catie Brown recorded two saves.

The Mustangs return to Westcott Field Sunday to take on [RV] Washington at 7 p.m. CT/5 PT. This is the final non-conference home game of the season, before closing the non-conference season outright at TCU Sunday, Sept. 25. The Huskies are coming off a 2-0 loss at Baylor.
