Oates Named AAC Offensive Player of the Week

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (SMU/AAC) – Junior Claire Oates was named the American Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week, league officials announced Monday. The midfielder won the honor after scoring two game-winning goals to lift the Mustangs over Saint Louis and [RV] Washington.

In the 61st minute against Saint Louis Friday night, senior Taylor Barg delivered a free kick to Blair Thorpe, who sent a cross into the box. Oates was there for the header, giving SMU the 2-1 lead.

Oates delivered the game winner in the 79th minute against Washington, sending a cross from Vanessa Valadez into the back of the net.

Oates played a full 90 minutes in both matches, and has played 607 minutes on the season. The Long Beach, Calif., native has tallied four goals this season on six shots on frame.

SMU is 6-2-0, and leads the NCAA in five statistical categories: total goals, scoring offense, assists per game, total points and points per game. Oates is tied for third in the conference in game-winning goals (2) and 53rd in the NCAA.

The Mustangs wrap up their non-conference slate at TCU Sunday at 7 p.m. in Fort Worth, Texas. TCU is 7-0-1 with a game at Oklahoma Friday before facing SMU.

Well-deserved! Claire is having another nice season and it's great to see our players recognized for what is happening on The Hilltop this fall.
