Mustangs Defeat Oral Roberts, 3-1, Tuesday Night At Westcott Field

Sept. 27, 2016

DALLAS (SMU)— The SMU men's soccer team closed out non-conference play beating Oral Roberts, 3-1, Tuesday night at Westcott Field. The Mustangs improved to 4-6-0, while the Golden Eagles fell to 4-4-1.

Junior midfielder Santiago Riveros scored the first goal of the match in the 29th minute to give Oral Roberts the 1-0 lead for the first period.

SMU bounced back with a strong second half as senior midfielder Taylor Curtis scored his first career goal in the 67th minute off of junior midfielder Bryce Clark's corner kick. Curtis found the ball in a cluster of players roughly five yards from the goal line and punched it past Oral Roberts goalkeeper Parker Johnson to even the score at 1-1. Clark was credited for his third assist of the season.

The Mustangs took a 2-1 lead in the 75th minute, as sophomore midfielder Caleb Smith beat an Oral Roberts defender on a breakaway, netting a ball set up by Curtis and senior midfielder Stanton Garcia. The goal was Smith's first of the season, as well as Curtis' and Garcia's first assist.

Sophomore Christian Boorom secured the victory in the 87th minute as he punched the ball in the net off Garrett McLaughlin's cross from the left side. The goal was also Boorom's first of the season, while McLaughlin earned his second assist.

SMU outshot the Golden Eagles, 16-7, with five shots on goal. Junior recorded four saves in 90 minutes of play.

The Mustangs are now 8-0-0 all-time against the Golden Eagles, with all eight wins coming in Dallas.

SMU travels to Florida this weekend to take on UCF Saturday Oct. 1. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. ET/6 p.m. CT.
