Hegarty's Double-Double Leads SMU To Comeback Win At Tulane, 3-2

NEW ORLEANS (SMU) – Katie Hegarty recorded her first career double-double, and Lauren Mills posted her sixth of the season to lead the SMU volleyball team to a five-set, comeback victory at Tulane Friday night (21-25, 17-25, 25-15, 25-14, 15-9). Hegarty scored a match-high 16 kills with a career-high 17 digs, while Mills finished with 13 kills and 13 digs. With the win, SMU improved to 3-0 in the American Athletic Conference and 10-5 overall, while Tulane fell to 9-6 overall and 1-2 in The American.

The Mustangs completed the comeback with a 15-9 victory in the fifth set, taking each of the last three sets for their second straight fifth-set win. After an attack error by Kristen Stehling allowed Tulane to tie the score, 6-6, setter Kendall Patterson went right back to the senior, who scored the point, starting a 4-0 run for the Mustangs, resulting in a 10-6 lead. Stehling added two more kills down the stretch to finish with 11 in the match and a team-high .360 attack percentage.

Brittany Adams scored 11 kills, giving SMU four attackers with at least 10 kills. Patterson recorded 48 assists and six digs, while Morgan Heise tallied 30 digs, reaching 30 for the first time this season. SMU hit .212 as a team, hitting above .250 in each of the last three sets. Janelle Giordano scored just six kills despite hitting .316, but recorded five blocks. SMU finished with 10 as a team.

SMU came out of the long break after the second set and took a 12-2 lead, scoring on eight kills, including four consecutive, and a pair of aces for the 10-point lead. The Mustangs went on to win the set by 10, 25-15, hitting .424 with 16 kills. Mills and Hegarty combined for seven of SMU's kills.

The Mustangs forced a fifth set with a 25-14 win in the fourth. SMU took a 9-3 lead, scoring seven points on eight serves to break a 2-2 tie. A 6-0 run for SMU stretched the lead to 10, 16-6. Hegarty had four kills in the set to pace the offense, which hit .294 with 12 kills. Tulane was limited to a .026 attack percentage in the set, scoring 10 kills with nine errors, including four blocks by the Mustangs.

Tulane scored four of the first five points in the first set, and SMU never recovered from the slow start. The Green Wave stretched the lead to seven, 14-7, before the Mustangs started to mount a comeback. A 5-1 run by SMU, which featured a pair of kills by Mills, brought the Mustangs to within three points, 15-12. SMU cut the lead to just two, 17-15, on Ashley Homan's only kill of the set, put the Mustangs couldn't get any closer, falling 25-21.

The Green Wave took a 2-0 lead in the match with a 25-17 victory in the second set. SMU never led, and again found itself trailing by seven early, 12-5. An 8-3 run cut the lead to two points, 15-13, with SMU scoring on three blocks and four kills. With the deficit still just two points, 17-15, a pair of SMU attack errors after a Tulane kill made it three straight points for the Green Wave. SMU couldn't recover as Tulane went on to the eight-point victory.

The Mustangs conclude the first conference road trip Sunday at Houston at 1 p.m. SMU lost at Houston in the 2015 American Athletic Conference opener before winning 16 straight matches.
