Mills Leads SMU To A Sweep At Houston

HOUSTON (SMU) – Lauren Mills scored 14 kills to lead the SMU volleyball team to a 3-0 win at Houston (25-17, 25-7, 25-14). With the win, SMU improved to 11-5 overall, and claimed sole possession of first place in the American Athletic Conference with a 4-0 record.

Mills hit a career-high .414, committing just two errors in 29 attempts, and also had eight digs. Brittany Adamshit a match- and career-high .600, scoring nine kills on 15 attempts. Kristen Stehling and Katie Hegarty each added seven kills, and Janelle Giordano recorded six blocks. SMU hit .368 as a team, scoring 43 kills, and held Houston to just 25 kills on a .053 attack percentage.

SMU posted a 25-14 victory in the third set to complete the sweep, its first against a league opponent this season. With only a 3-2 lead, SMU went on a 9-3 run to take a 12-5 lead. The Cougars (5-10, 0-4 The American) never got within six points again.

The Mustangs allowed just seven points in the second set, taking a 2-0 lead in the match with a 25-7 win. SMU scored the first eight points unanswered, scoring three kills with three blocks in the run. Houston managed only five kills, while SMU with .478 with 13 kills and only two attack errors in the set. Giordano was in on all three of the SMU blocks, and Hegarty led the offense with four kills.

SMU won the first set 25-17, starting with a 6-1 run. The Mustangs led by as many as nine in the set, which featured 17 kills by SMU. Adams had four kills in the set, while Mills paced the offense with five. Houston was held to a .152 attack percentage.

The Mustangs return home to host Connecticut Friday at 7 p.m. in Moody Coliseum. The Huskies are tied for second in the league with a 3-1 conference record and are 12-3 overall.
