DALLAS (SMU) – The SMU volleyball team suffered its first conference loss, falling in five sets to Temple in Moody Coliseum Sunday afternoon. Brittany Adamsscored a career high 17 kills and had 12 digs for her first career double-double, but it wasn't enough to keep the Mustangs from dropping to 5-1 in the American Athletic Conference and 12-6 overall. With the win, Temple moved into a tie with SMU and Cincinnati at the top of the league standings at 5-1, and the Owls are 12-4 overall.

After losing the third and fourth sets, Temple won the fifth set 15-9. SMU took a 2-1 lead, but it was the only time the Mustangs led in the final set. The Owls went on a 5-1 run to take a 6-3 lead, and SMU wasn't able to get within two points the rest of the set.

SMU won the third set, 25-21, avoiding being swept at home in a conference match for the first time since a 3-0 loss to eventual league champion Louisville on Oct. 3, 2013. Giordano scored five kills with three blocks to lead the scoring for the Mustangs, and Adams added four kills. SMU took a 9-3 lead to start the set, but a 5-0 run by Temple quickly the lead to one. SMU stretch the lead back to five, 14-9, but the Owls again rallied back, tying the score 17-17. It was one of just two ties in the set, and SMU never gave up the lead, hitting .409 with 13 kills.

The Mustangs forced a fifth set with a 25-19 win in the fourth set, led by Adams' five kills. SMU held Temple to a .105 attack percentage in the set, out-scoring the Owls 13-10 in the attack. The Mustangs scored five straight to break a 10-10 tie. Temple battled back, tying the score 18-18, but a service error gave SMU the lead, 19-18. SMU held the Owls to just one more point, finishing the set on a 7-1 run.

The Owls erased an early, three-point deficit, scoring three unanswered to tie the score, 8-8. The rally sparked an 8-1 run that propelled Temple to a 25-19 win in the first set. SMU hit just .209 in the set, and managed only 13 kills, while the Owls hit .316 with 17 kills.

Temple took a 2-0 lead in the match, holding on for a 25-23 win in the second set. With the score tied, 23-23, SMU was scrambling, but looked as if it was going to get a solid attack attempt, but Mills was called for a double touch on the set. The Owls scored a block on the next serve for the two-point victory. SMU took a 4-0 lead to start the set, but Temple came back to tie the score, 7-7. Neither team led by more than two points until Adams blasted a kill out of a Temple timeout, giving SMU an 18-15 lead, but the Owls again came back, scoring five of the next six points for a 20-19 lead. SMU was unable to recapture the advantage, falling behind 2-0 in the match.

The Mustangs host Tulsa Wednesday at 6 p.m., concluding a three-match homestand. SMU then plays its next three matches on the road, starting at Memphis Friday before playing a pair of matches in Florida.
