Men's soccer offense erupts in shutout at Memphis

SMU’s Offense Shines in 4-0 Rout at Memphis

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (SMU) – The SMU offense generated 17 shots with seven on goal, en route to a 4-0 win at Memphis Saturday night. SMU improves to 5-8-0 overall, and wins its first American Athletic Conference game (1-3), while Memphis falls to 7-5-1, 1-2-1 in The American.

In the eighth minute, Memphis' Jackson Morse sent an errant pass into the Tigers' back field, where Garrett McLaughlin was all alone. McLaughlin collected the bad pass and carried the ball into the far corner of the 18-yard box, where he netted a left-footed shot past a diving Jake Leeker. The goal is the third of his career.

Jordan Cano gave SMU a 2-0 advantage in the 42nd minute, finishing a rebounded shot off a Mauro Cicherofree kick. The goal was Cano's first of the year.

In the second half, the Mustangs tacked on two, to seal the game.

Christian Boorom collected a cross from McLaughlin in the 56th minute, and fired a shot from six-yards out, to give SMU a 3-0 advantage. This is the second goal of the season for Boorom, and the third assist for McLaughlin.

In the 68th minute, Dwight Williams, Jr., forced a turnover at midfield and carried the ball all the way to the top of the 18-yard box, where he netted a right-footed shot into the lower, near corner. The goal is his second of the season.

Michael Nelson preserved the clean sheet, recording two saves.

The Mustangs return to action Sun., Oct. 23, as SMU hosts Cincinnati. The game is slated for 7 p.m.
