Oct. 14, 2016

MADISON, Wis. (SMU) – The No. 24 SMU cross country team knocked off four top-25 teams, including two top-10 teams at the Nuttycombe Wisconsin invitational Friday afternoon at the Thomas Zimmer Championship Cross Country Course.

"I was pleased with how the team raced today. We beat four ranked teams so we accomplished what we needed to do here," head coach Cathy Casey said.

The Mustangs finished 17th with 388 points, ahead of No. 10 Boise State (404), No. 6 Michigan State (439) and No. 20 Syracuse (454), who finished 18th, 19th and 20th, respectively. No. 18 Georgetown finished 22nd with 525 points.

No. 4 Washington won the meet with 124 points, followed by No. 3 North Carolina State with 166 and No. 1 Providence with 170.

For the second-consecutive meet, freshman Hannah Miller led the top-3 Mustangs finishing the 6-kilometer race 21st out of 211 competitors. The Invercargill, New Zealand, native was the top freshman to finish the course in a time of 20 minutes, 37.1 seconds. Senior Holly Archer was the second SMU finisher with a time of 21:02.5 to finish 60th, while freshman Charlotte-Tara Murphy finished 66th in a time of 21:05.5.

The two other SMU scorers were senior Justine Anthony and sophomore Rakel Barrientos. Anthony finished with a personal-best time of 21:33.5 to place 111th, while Barrientos placed 130th with a time of 21:45.5. Senior Agnes Sjostrom placed 138th (21:49.4) and sophomore Anneke Grogan finished 149th (21:55.2).

The Mustangs will get two weeks to prepare for the American Athletic Conference Championship, which takes place Saturday, Oct. 29 at the Voice of America MetroPark in West Chester, Ohio, hosted by Cincinnati.

"We came away from this meet knowing we still have some work to do. Now the focus will shift to the conference championship in two weeks," Casey said.
