AJGA Names Wright Rolex Junior All-American

BRASELTON, Ga. (SMU/AJGA) – SMU freshman Kenzie Wright was one of three Dallas-area golfers to be named to the American Junior Golf Association Rolex Junior All-American team, the organization announced Thursday.

Introduced by the AJGA in 1978, the Rolex Junior All-America Teams annually recognize players who have proven to be the world's premier junior golfers. This year's teams are comprised of 96 junior golfers, ages 13-19, from 19 states, the District of Columbia, Chile, China, Mexico, Thailand and the United Kingdom. These young men and women distinguished themselves through their outstanding play in 132 national junior golf events, 117 of which were conducted by the AJGA. The Rolex Junior All-America Teams were determined exclusively through the Polo Golf Rankings as of Oct. 12.

The Frisco, Texas, native won the Joanne Winter Arizona Silver Belle Championship and earned her top 2016 AJGA finish at the Winn Gripps Heather Farr Classic, finishing tied for seventh.

At the AJGA East vs. West Wyndham Cup, Wright and the team from the west retained the cup, earning a 26-24 victory after a combination of foursome, four-ball and singles matches. She also was part of the Northern Texas team that earned a 17-7 victory over Southern Texas team at the Ben Hogan Junior Cup. She also won the NTPGA Junior Match Play Championship in June and competed at the U.S. Women's Amateur Four-Ball Championship in May.

Wright has played in all three tournaments to open the 2016-17 season for the Mustangs. Her highest finish came at the Betsy Rawls Longhorn Invitational Oct. 17 & 18 where she placed fourth. Wright also garnered a top-10 finish at the Mason Rudolph Championship, which included a 6-under 66 final round to place her in a three-way tie for eighth.

The 2016 Rolex Junior All-America Teams will be honored at the Rolex Junior All-America Awards Banquet, Nov. 20, at PGA National Resort & Spa in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, along with Transamerica Scholastic Junior All-Americans and the Jerry Cole Sportsmanship Award recipient. By being named a Rolex Junior All-American, each player has been invited to compete in the Polo Golf Junior Classic, Nov. 19-25, at PGA National Resort & Spa.

Wright and the Mustangs return to action Oct. 23 for the three-day Maryb S. Kauth Invitational hosted by UTSA in San Antonio. Visit SMUMustangs.com for live results.
