Cano Named AAC Defensive Player Of The Week; Nelson Named To Weekly Honor Roll

Oct. 24, 2016

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (SMU) – Junior defender Jordan Cano was named the American Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week and junior goalkeeper Michael Nelson was named to the weekly honor roll, the conference announced Monday.

Cano's first-half goal lead the Mustangs to a 1-0 victory over Cincinnati Sunday night, clinching SMU's second consecutive conference win. Cano headed the ball past the Cincinnati goalkeeper to net the game-winning goal.

It was the second goal of the season for Cano, who also scored in the 4-0 victory over Memphis last Saturday. Cano also helped anchor the backline that only allowed three shots on goal for the entire match and helped preserve the second consecutive shutout for the Mustangs.

Nelson tallied three saves in 90 minutes of play this weekend. He has now completed back-to-back shutouts in AAC play. He holds three shutouts this year.

The Mustangs return to Westcott Field for Senior Night next Saturday as they host USF. The senior class will be honored at 6:45 p.m. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
