Volleyball Records 12 Blocks In 3-0 Win Against Houston

DALLAS (SMU) – The SMU volleyball team matched its season high with 12.0 blocks to sweep Houston (25-13, 25-9, 25-20) in Moody Coliseum Friday night, improving to 17-6 overall and 10-1 in the American Athletic Conference. Janelle Giordano posted eight blocks for the fourth time this season, and Katie Hegarty was credited with a season-high seven block assists.

SMU held Houston to a .081 attack percentage, recording 32 digs, with Lauren Mills and Morgan Heise leading the Mustangs with eight digs each to lead the defense behind the block. Offensively, the Mustangs hit .358, their third-highest attack percentage this season, with Mills leading the scoring with 11 kills, and Hegarty finishing with 10 kills. Mills had just one error, hitting .526 to lead all attackers with at least five attempts.

The Mustangs were dominant from the start, scoring the first three points with a block and a kill after a Houston attack error. After Brianna Lynch scored two kills for Houston, SMU went on a 9-3 run to take a 12-5 lead. Houston never got within six point again, falling 25-13 in the first set.

SMU was even more dominant in the second set, holding Houston to just nine points. Patterson scored three aces in the first five serves, and led SMU to a 6-0 lead to start the set. Houston again trailed 12-5, but SMU then out-scored the Cougars 13-4 to end the set and take a 2-0 lead in the match with the 25-9 win.

The Cougars (5-17, 0-11 The American) kept the third set close, leading for the first time in the match after scoring the first point, but SMU scored three straight to take a 6-5 lead and never trailed again. The SMU lead was just three late, 21-18, but SMU scored on four of the final six serves, including kills by Giordano and Mills on the last two points, the end the set, 25-20, and win the match.

SMU wraps up the homestand, which marks the start of the second round of the conference schedule, against Tulane Sunday at 1 p.m. in Moody Coliseum.
