Klein Sets 3-Meter Records, 200 Medley Relay Wins Conference Championship

HOUSTON (SMU) – The SMU men's swimming and diving team picked up a pair of conference championships on night one of the American Athletic Conference Championships at the CRWC Natatorium in Houston. The event runs Wednesday through Saturday.

Bryce Klein set and broke his own meet and program records on 3 meter with his second consecutive conference championship in the event. In the Championship Final, the junior finished over 115 points ahead of his closest competitor and broke his own school standard by nearly 12 points with a six-round 436.45. Klein previously scored a 424.60 in the event at the Art Adamson Invitational on Nov. 20, 2015.

Klein's day began with an impressive preliminary performance that was 122.7 points ahead of the field and a meet-record in the event. The 424.05 bested his own total of 415.10 posted at the 2014 Championships. He holds school and conference meet records on both the 1 and 3 meter.

The Ponies' second championship of the night came in relay form when Bartosz Krzyzaniak, Ziga Cerkovnik, Simon Golczyk and Ralph Koo paced the field in the 200-yard medley relay. SMU combined for a season-best 1:27.00 to out-touch the squad from East Carolina by 11-hundredths of a second for its second straight conference championship in the event.

The evening began with the Mustangs narrowly defeating Cincinnati in the 800-yard freestyle relay as Krzyzaniak, Lucas Schenke, Carson Klein and Christian Scherubl clocked a season-best 6:30.11 for third place.

SMU is currently fourth in the standings with 92 points. East Carolina leads the event with 114 points, while Connecticut (105) and Cincinnati (101) round out the top three.

Action resumes tomorrow with the 500-yard freestyle, 200-yard individual medley, 50-yard freestyle, 200-yard freestyle relay and 1 meter diving. Visit TheAmerican.org/swim for all of your Championship information, and follow the Mustangs on Twitter (@SMUSwimmingM) for in-event updates.
