Hegarty To Attend U.S. Women's National Team Open Tryout

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (USA Volleyball/SMU) – Katie Hegarty will attend the USA Volleyball Women's National Team Open Tryouts March 3-5 in Colorado Springs, Colo. The AVCA All-Region honoree was selected to compete with the Collegiate National Team in Indianapolis last year.

The tryout will evaluate 240 athletes from 84 colleges and 10 high schools from across the country for spots on the U.S. Women's National Team and the U.S. Collegiate National Team program. Further, select athletes born in 1998 or 1999 are also competing for spots on the 2017 U.S. Women's Junior National Team.

U.S. Women's National Team Head Coach Karch Kiraly will direct the entire tryout process. The tryout will involve four sessions with three waves per session. Friday's first session goes from 2-8 p.m. MT, while Saturday's sessions are at 8 a.m. (focus on serve/receive and individual work) and 2 p.m. (middle-centered and out-of-system focus). The final session on Sunday begins at 7:30 a.m. MT with tournament style play, along with 16-18 athletes selected by the U.S. Women's National Team staff to participate in a "USA" training session. The Sunday session wraps up at 10:30 a.m. MT.

Hegarty led the Mustangs with 461 kills, the most at SMU since Rachel Giubilato scored 568 kills in 2006 to earn the program's first All-Region accolade with an All-Midwest Region Honorable Mention selection. The junior from Aztec, N.M., recorded the league's first triple-double and the sixth in program history with 22 kills, 12 digs and 10 blocks in a win against Tulane, and scored a career-high 23 kills in a three-set win over Little Rock. Hegarty scored 20 kills in a 3-1 win against TCU.

The opposite hitter finished the year with a .251 attack percentage, and recorded 197 digs, posting four double-doubles in addition to the triple-double. She also scored 14 kills in the first round of the NCAA Tournament against Texas A&M, and had 11 kills against No. 4 Texas in the second round.
